How Much Does a Doula Cost and Why

One of the most common questions I get asked is, “How much does a doula cost?” It’s an important question and something I think every family should feel comfortable asking. The truth is, doula support can look different for everyone, and prices often reflect the time, care, and experience that each doula brings to their work.

In most cases, birth doula services range anywhere from $1,200 to $2,000. Some doulas who are newer or still certifying may offer lower rates as they build experience, while more established doulas with additional training or specialized services may charge more. The cost can also vary depending on what’s included in the package.

When you hire a doula, you’re not just paying for the time spent at your birth. You’re investing in weeks or even months of ongoing support and preparation. Most packages include prenatal visits, 24/7 on-call availability around your due date, continuous labour support, and postpartum follow-ups. Behind the scenes, we spend time writing birth plans, offering resources, checking in regularly, and supporting the emotional ups and downs that come with pregnancy and new parenthood. It’s a lot more than just showing up the day your baby arrives.

What About Postpartum Doulas?

Postpartum doulas work a little differently when it comes to pricing. Many charge hourly rates, while others offer packages for a set number of hours or days — and sometimes a mix of both. This allows families to find something that fits their specific needs and budget. Hourly rates can vary depending on experience, location, and whether the care is daytime or overnight, but generally fall between $35 to $60 per hour.

Packages might include a set number of visits or hours spread out over the first few weeks or months, which can be a great option for families wanting consistent support. The beauty of postpartum doula work is that it’s flexible and personalized. Some families just need a few visits to help get settled, while others benefit from longer-term support as they adjust to life with a new baby.

Making Doula Care Accessible

For me, this work is about accessibility and connection. I never want cost to be the reason someone misses out on support, which is why I offer sliding scale options and occasionally take on pro bono clients when I can. Everyone deserves compassionate care, no matter their situation, and making that possible is really important to me.

The value of a doula isn’t just in the hours spent together. It’s about having someone who truly knows your story, your preferences, and your hopes for your birth and postpartum experience. It’s about continuous, caring support from someone who can help you feel grounded, informed, and confident as you move through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. Many families say hiring a doula was one of the best decisions they made because it gave them peace of mind, made the experience more positive and supportive, and helped them feel more confident.

Whether you choose a newer doula who’s building experience or someone with years of training, the heart of the work is the same. Every doula brings something unique, but we all share the same goal — to make sure you feel seen, heard, and cared for through one of life’s biggest transitions.

If you’re thinking about hiring a doula or want to learn more about my pricing and payment options, I’d love to chat. My goal is to make doula care feel accessible, supportive, and personal for every family who needs it.
