One of the first things new parents often wonder once their baby arrives is something that sounds pretty simple.
How often should a newborn eat?
And the honest answer is that newborn feeding can look a little different for every baby, but there are some general patterns that can help guide expectations.
In the early weeks most newborns eat every two to three hours.
Sometimes even more frequently.
That means babies may feed eight to twelve times within a twenty four hour period.
For parents who are adjusting to life with a newborn, this can feel like feeding happens almost constantly.
But there is a reason for that.
Newborn stomachs are very small
In the first days after birth, a baby’s stomach is incredibly small.
Because of this, babies need to eat frequently to get the calories and hydration they need.
Whether babies are breastfeeding, chestfeeding, or bottle feeding, frequent feeding helps support growth and development during those early weeks.
It also helps establish milk supply for breastfeeding parents.
Feeding patterns change over time
As babies grow, their stomach capacity increases and feeding patterns gradually begin to stretch out.
But in the beginning, frequent feeding is very normal.
Some babies cluster feed, especially during growth spurts. That means they may want to eat several times close together.
While that can feel exhausting for parents, it is a common and temporary stage for many babies.
This is one of the many things families often learn during perinatal education classes before baby arrives.
