Round Ligament Pain During Pregnancy: What It Feels Like and How to Find Relief

At some point during pregnancy, usually when your belly starts growing and your body begins changing faster than you can keep up with, you might suddenly feel something that makes you stop and wonder…

What was that sharp pain?

A lot of pregnant people end up searching:

Is round ligament pain normal during pregnancy?

And honestly, it can be a little alarming the first time it happens.

You’re growing a whole human, your body is changing constantly, and then out of nowhere you get a sharp pulling, stabbing, or aching sensation in your lower belly or groin area.

Naturally, your first thought might be, “Okay… is something wrong?”

The good news is that for many people, this is a very normal part of pregnancy.

This is what we call round ligament pain.

What is round ligament pain?

The round ligaments are bands of connective tissue that help support the uterus and hold it in place within the pelvis.

Before pregnancy, the uterus is relatively small, and these ligaments do not have the same amount of stretching and pressure placed on them.

But as pregnancy progresses and the uterus grows, those ligaments stretch and become more flexible to accommodate your growing baby.

Think of it like your body constantly adjusting and making room.

Sometimes those movements can cause discomfort.

Round ligament pain is usually felt as a sharp, sudden pulling or stabbing sensation on one or both sides of the lower abdomen, hips, or groin.

Some people describe it as feeling like a quick “zap” or a painful stretch.

Others describe it as a dull ache afterward.

When does round ligament pain usually happen?

Round ligament pain is most common during the second trimester, although some people notice it earlier or later in pregnancy.

This is often when the uterus begins growing more rapidly and the ligaments are under more tension.

Many people notice it when they:

Stand up quicklyRoll over in bedChange positions suddenlyCough or sneezeWalk for longer periodsExercise or move quickly

Basically, anything that causes the uterus to shift suddenly can sometimes trigger that pulling sensation.

And honestly, pregnancy is full of those weird little moments where your body reminds you that things are changing.

What can help with round ligament pain?

The good news is there are a few things that may help make round ligament pain more manageable.

Moving slowly when changing positions can help reduce sudden pulling on the ligaments. Getting up from a chair or bed more gradually can make a surprising difference.

Gentle stretching, prenatal yoga, and regular movement can also help support your changing body.

Some people find comfort from using pregnancy support belts, especially later in pregnancy when the extra weight of the belly can put more strain on the pelvis and ligaments.

Warm baths, gentle massage, and rest can also help when your body feels like it needs a break.

And honestly, sometimes the best thing you can do is listen to your body.

Pregnancy is not the time to push through every discomfort just because you technically can.

When should you check in with your provider?

While round ligament pain is common, it is still important to pay attention to your body.

You should reach out to your healthcare provider if you experience:

Severe or constant abdominal painBleedingFeverPain with urinationRegular cramping or contractionsPain that does not improve with rest

Pregnancy comes with a lot of new sensations, and it can sometimes be difficult to know what is normal and what needs a second look.

That is exactly why asking questions is so important.

Understanding your changing body during pregnancy

One of the biggest parts of pregnancy education is simply understanding what is happening inside your body.

When you know why something is happening, it can take away some of the fear and uncertainty.

This is one of the reasons I offer Perinatal Education as part of my services. Preparing for birth is not just about learning breathing techniques or what happens during labor. It is also about understanding the physical and emotional changes that happen throughout pregnancy.

If you are looking for support through pregnancy, birth, or postpartum in the London, Strathroy-Caradoc, or Sarnia areas, you can also learn more about my Birth and Postpartum Doula Support services here on the site.

Because pregnancy is a huge transition, and you deserve to feel informed and supported through every weird, wonderful, and sometimes uncomfortable part of it.

Round ligament pain might not be the most glamorous part of pregnancy, but it is one of those little reminders that your body is constantly adapting to grow and support your baby.

And honestly?

That is pretty incredible.
