If you’re expecting a baby, you might have heard both “midwife” and “doula” and wondered what the difference really is. Both play important roles in supporting families through pregnancy and birth, but they do very different things. Understanding the difference can help you decide what kind of support feels right for you.
A midwife is a medical professional who provides clinical care before, during, and after birth. They monitor the health of both parent and baby, manage labour, and can perform medical tasks like delivering your baby, prescribing medications, and handling complications. Midwives are trained to keep you and your baby safe, whether you’re planning a hospital birth, a birth center birth, or a home birth. Their focus is on the medical side of things and making sure everything goes as safely as possible.
A doula, on the other hand, is not a medical professional. A birth doula is there to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. We help you feel calm, confident, and supported, offering hands-on comfort measures, coping techniques, and guidance for your partner or support people. We don’t do medical tasks, but we make sure you feel seen, heard, and empowered every step of the way.
The biggest difference is that midwives focus on the medical side of birth, while doulas focus on your emotional, physical, and informational needs. Many families choose to work with both. Having a midwife and a doula can give you the best of both worlds: the medical expertise of a midwife and the continuous, personal support of a doula. Families often say this combination makes the whole experience feel calmer, more supported, and more empowering.
Working with a doula also gives you extra time to talk through your birth preferences, practice comfort techniques, and prepare your support team. On the day of your baby’s arrival, I’m there full-time to help you feel comfortable, supported, and empowered. I can even help capture those first moments with optional birth and newborn photography, so you can preserve these special memories.
Choosing a midwife, a doula, or both is a personal decision, and it’s important to find someone you feel comfortable with and trust. A midwife keeps your birth safe from a medical standpoint, while a doula makes sure you are supported emotionally and physically. Together, they can create an experience that’s safe, calm, and empowering.
If you’re curious about what having a doula could look like for you, I’d love to chat. Whether you’re planning a hospital birth, home birth, or something in between, I provide full support throughout pregnancy, labour, and postpartum, including optional birth and newborn photography so you can remember these first precious moments.
