What Does a Doula Do?

When people hear the word “doula,” they usually think of birth, but doula work extends far beyond that. Doulas support people through some of life’s biggest transitions, offering care that’s emotional, physical, and deeply personal. The heart of doula work is about presence, compassion, and helping people feel supported and seen. No matter what season of life they’re in.
A doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We’re not medical professionals, but we work alongside your care team to make sure you feel informed, confident, and cared for every step of the way. During pregnancy, that might mean helping you explore your options, preparing for birth, and finding comfort techniques that feel right for you.
When labour begins, your doula offers continuous support. That could look like hands-on comfort, breathing guidance, encouragement, or simply being a steady presence through the waves of labour. We’re also there for your partner or support people, helping them feel confident and connected throughout the process.
After birth, a postpartum doula
helps families adjust to life with a new baby. That might mean offering feeding support, answering questions, helping you rest, or simply being there to listen without judgment. Postpartum is a time of big emotions, recovery, and change and having someone there to hold space and make things feel more manageable can make all the difference.
But doula work doesn’t stop at birth and postpartum. There are many different modalities of doula care, each one centred around support during life’s major transitions. Some doulas focus on fertility or abortion support, offering care and compassion through reproductive journeys. Others are death doulas, providing emotional and spiritual support at the end of life, helping individuals and families navigate death with dignity and peace. There are also loss doulas, adoption doulas, and those who specialize in supporting families through grief and healing.
Each type of doula work is unique, but the heart behind it is always the same — to offer comfort, connection, and understanding during times of change. Whether we’re helping you welcome a baby, supporting you through postpartum, holding space through loss, or walking beside you at the end of life, our purpose is to make sure you feel supported, respected, and never alone.
For me, being a doula is about honouring every part of the human experience. Birth, death, and everything in between deserve care that feels gentle, grounded, and human. My role is to walk alongside families through these transitions with compassion and presence, creating space for peace, empowerment, and connection wherever they are in their journey.
If you’ve ever wondered what a doula really does or how having one might change your experience, I’d love to chat. Whether you’re preparing for birth, postpartum, or another meaningful transition, I’m here to offer support that meets you where you are.
