When to Take a Pregnancy Test, Find Your Birth Team and Hire Your Doula

One of the most common things people ask during early pregnancy is when they should take a test, when they should start looking for their birth team and when they should hire their doula. The early weeks are full of excitement and nerves, and it helps to have a clear idea of what to expect and when to start planning.

Most people take a pregnancy test right around the time their period is due. Home tests are very accurate once you have missed your period, and some of the more sensitive ones can even pick up early pregnancy a few days before. If you get a faint line, it still counts. From there, you can decide whether you want bloodwork done or if you would rather wait until your first prenatal appointment.

Once you have that positive result, it is a great time to start learning about your care options. Some people already know the type of birth provider they want, but a lot of people have no idea where to start, which is completely normal. Whether you are thinking about a midwife or an OB, it is always better to reach out early. Midwifery care fills up quickly, and many practices book their clients as soon as they get a positive test. OB care is usually easier to access, but still good to arrange ahead of time so you can build a relationship with your provider.

The same goes for hiring your doula. You do not need to rush into anything, but reaching out early helps you find someone you actually connect with. Many doulas book months in advance, especially for busy seasons. The earlier you reach out, the more likely you are to secure the doula you really want. You also get time to meet them, ask questions and feel out the energy before committing.

Some people wait until the second trimester to hire a doula, and that is completely fine too. There is no wrong time, but hiring early means you get ongoing support, help navigating symptoms, guidance during ultrasounds and appointments, and someone in your corner right from the start. Doulas can help you understand your options, build your birth preferences and prepare mentally and physically for whatever type of birth you want.

Building your birth team should feel calm and empowering, not rushed. The moment you have that positive test, you can take things one step at a time. Confirm your pregnancy, explore your care options, reach out to a midwife or OB and connect with doulas whose approach feels supportive and grounded.

Pregnancy moves fast, and having the right people around you makes such a difference. A strong birth team gives you support, information and stability throughout your entire journey. And the sooner you start looking, the more choices you have in creating the experience you want.

Hands form a heart over a positive pregnancy test on a woman's belly, wearing a white shirt. The mood is intimate and hopeful.
